Bituin Escalante's 'An Evening with a Star'

Last 23rd October, 2003, Bituin wowed her audience at her dinner concert held
at the Movenpick hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Aside from Filipinos,
the audience consisted of foreigneres who were equally ovewhelmed by her
performance. Silence crept at the eager crowd as she sang her opening number. You could hear sighs and cheers of appreciation by the time she finished her first song and this continued until her grand finale. "Balot", "Cabaret" and her rendition of "Somewhere over the rainbow" are just a few of the crowd's favorites that night. Bituin was also joined by the Harana Boys of Dubai's St. Mary's church who each sang a few duets with her. I was privileged to have the chance to interview Bituin during her stay in Dubai. Read on...

Jeane Patrick: Aside from singing, what was your first passion?
Bituin Escalante: Eating! (Laughs) I want to be able to raise a family... be proud that I can
cook.

JP: You can cook? What's your specialty?
BE: Chicken Curry, Lamb Cous-cous and Hainanese Chicken

JP: So, excited? Nervous about tonight?
BE: Yup... nervous and excited!

JP: What songs will you be singing tonight?
BE: HA? Come watch the show na lang!

JP: I am watching the show! Sige, name one!
BE: The Himig Handog song. The one I won for.

JP: Everybody knows it!
BE: Yeah... almost everybody does!

JP: For you, what audience is easier to perform for? Filipinos or foregners?
Kase diba Pinoys are usually known for their being hard to please sometimes?
BE: Foreigners. But you know, it's a lot more rewarding to sing for Filipinos.

JP: When you were little, did you have any training? Since you came from a
family of musicians?
BE: Watching Sesame Street! Hehehe... Yeah, everyone in the family was
musical... we had music 24/7 but there was no formal training.

JP: You were performing in thatre before you appeared on television. Which do you prefer?
BE: Theatre! Definitely!

JP: Really? Why?
BE: Coz it doesn't leave you as vulnerable. When you're doing television,
that's you they see... you're subject to all the critisizms. Unlike theatre, you
portray a character. It's not you that they're watching. When the day is done,
the day is done. And it's a richer experience to be assumin a character and you can still put a little truth to it. But it doesn't leave you vulnerable. It doesn't mean that it's your feelings that they're seeing.

JP: What's your favorite song?
BE: A LOT!

JP: Name one.
BE: One lang? uhm.... Don't stop me now by Queen

JP: Favorite singer?
BE: Stevie Wonder

JP: Favorite song by Stevie Wonder?
BE: Overjoyed (Sings a couple of lines of the song)

JP: Who's your favorite to perform with?
BE: Ah, DULCE!

JP: WOW! Iba siya! Noh?
BE: Yup. She sings from the gut... from the heart. And when you see someone like that, you squeeze out what you have... she's so giving eh! So encouraging! IBA SIYA! IBA SIYA TALAGA EH!

JP: Now, who do you dream of working with?
BE: STING! Matapang siya, I love their songs. He's done everything and he's
never lost his integrity. If you perform with someone like that... you'd learn
so much.

JP: The questions your fans are waiting for: about your lovelife!
BE: (Raises her hand and shows me a ring)

JP: OKAY! Say no more!
BE: (Laughs)

JP: Albums coming up?
BE: Yup... I have a self-titiled album.

JP: So, any dreams left for Bituin Escalante?
BE: The best dream to have is to keep learning. Keep learning new things. Even if you don't make it... atleast learn. Kase fame, someday, may not be there anymore. But everything you learned will be there.

JP: Thank you so much Bituin.
BE: Your most welcome.

JP: Goodluck!
BE: Thank you very much!
